New Golf carries ASTech DNA
Gaimersheim/Wolfsburg – With the market introduction of the VW Golf VIII in December 2019, a piece of ASTech development will hit the streets. The new Golf, which features WLANp ITS G5 Car2X communication as standard equipment, can send and receive vehicle information at high-speed at a range of approximately 800 meters. The technology is used to notify and warn drivers of potential danger spots such as construction sites, broken down or stalled vehicles, accidents and traffic congestion. This technology has the potential to avoid accidents, reduce injuries and save lives, thus positively influencing the EuroNCAP rating.
ASTech was substantially involved in the function, which also carries the name wireless local hazard warning (LHW), with the complete development stemming from the company. On behalf of our customer VW, our four-person team has worked since 2016 to not only create the requirements documents and specifications, but also to provide support during commissioning and testing. ASTech thus created the foundation that allowed the software to be developed in support of such an important, life-saving safety function.
ASTech’s work is far from complete with the introduction of the new Golf however. Our colleagues in Wolfsburg are already working on concrete follow-up projects such as the development and integration of the Golf VIII facelift into all future VW models, from the ID.3 NEO and VW’s planned e-vehicle, to the Passat. An expansion of the function designed especially for the Chinese market is being worked on in parallel.
On behalf of VW, ASTech will furthermore take over system development of the connected ACC (CACC) function in 2020.cACC expands the ACC function to the virtual sensor (Car2X) so that the system can react to vehicles that are not even within radar range. That means for example that a vehicle equipped with cACC will decelerate as it approaches a traffic jam even before the end of the congestion is within range of the radar.
As ASTech still has a lot of work ahead of it, things will remain exciting for everyone involved.
